From the Director
CSSCR is pleased to offer another quarter of Rrrrrrmageddon, a series of early quarter R (and sometimes other) short courses to help students get a leg up on the software needs for their courses. These short courses have been very popular, so register early. Our short courses are open to anyone in the UW community. Course descriptions and sign-up information follows.

Introduction to R with R Studio
Description:
This class will teach you how to get started with R using the
free integrated development environment called Rstudio. The course will cover the basic
organization of R and Rstudio, where to find good help
references, and how to begin a basic analysis. This class is
ideal for users who have little or no experience with R.

Introduction to R Base Graphics
Description:
This class will introduce students to ways of producing effective graphs in R. Topics covered will include basic plotting functions (histograms, scatter plots, etc.), production of multi-panel graphs, and various means for exporting graphs for use outside of R.

Census Workshops
Using Census Bureau Demographic and Economic Data to Spur Economic Development: Case Study on Washington's Healthcare Industry
Description:
This workshop will combine both presentation and lab formats to provide a deep, detailed dive into the data from selected monthly, quarterly, annual, and periodic economic programs conducted by the US Census Bureau that can be used by economic planners and development staff to promote economic growth in Washington. While focusing on the healthcare industry, Andy will show how the economic development landscape changes depending on whether you focus on employer businesses alone or include non-employer businesses. Attendees will learn how to use the data through hands on exercises.

Using Census Bureau Data for Business Development: Introducing Census Business Builder
Description:
Focusing on the healthcare industry, this workshop will continue to elaborate on topics touched on in the morning workshop and will show how grant writers, planners, and others can use information from the Census Bureau's economic and demographic programs. Local area data for Washington will be discussed that can help businesses better understand their customers and market as well as their competitors and industry. New features from the Census Business Builder: Small Business Edition and the Census Business Builder: the Regional Analyst Edition will be highlighted. Attendees will learn about the data and tools through hands on exercises.
