From the Director
Changes are coming to CSSCR. This summer, I'll be leaving CSSCR after four years as director to take a new role as the director of the Center for Statistics and the Social Sciences (CSSS). It has been a great privilege to work with the outstanding people at CSSCR. Carol, Jeff and Tina are the heart of center, and keep it running smoothly and professionally, and they have been great partners in finding better ways to serve our member departments and the larger UW community. Our consulting center is staffed by graduate students from across the social sciences with serious analytical chops. Interacting with a large group of bright, talented graduate students on an almost daily basis has been deeply rewarding.
I am pleased to announce that Prof. Jerry Herting will serve as acting director of CSSCR next year. Jerry is just finishing up his position as chair of the Sociology Department. One of Jerry's unique qualifications for this role is that he made good use of CSSCR while an undergraduate and graduate student at the University of Washington. CSSCR is extremely fortunate to have him step into the role of director.

If you haven't made lab reservations for your summer course, please do so soon. With the Autumn schedule going live this week, now is a good time to reserve labs for Autumn. You can verify your lab reservations and check for space availability on our online calendar. Give us a call (206-543-8110) or drop us an email at csscr@u.washington.edu. The labs can be reserved by faculty in our member departments. Students and student groups are welcomed to reserve the labs for workshops, experiments, group projects, etc.

Using the American Community Survey (ACS) Estimates
Description:
The Census Bureau's American Community Survey (ACS) is a great source for detailed population and household characteristics, giving estimates and margins of error (MOE) for many aspects of the American population. However, sometimes users must blend ACS results in order to arrive at the exact measure needed. In this class we will explore some Excel-based templates containing several "calculators" that let users enter the published ACS estimates and MOEs to assess the precision of individual estimates, to compare pairs of estimates for their statistical differences and to calculate the MOEs and Standard Errors (SEs) for summing/subtracting, proportion and ratios of estimates. A variety of means for accessing ACS data will be also introduced.

Data Wrangling in R
Description:
This course will cover some of R's useful tools for data management and exploration. Most of class will be devoted to learning Hadley Wickham's excellent tidyr and dplyr packages. Attendees will be assumed to have basic familiarity with R.

Introduction to GIS
Description:
This course will provide students with a broad overview of what geographic information systems (GISs) are
and how social scientists can benefit from using them in their research. Students will explore basic GIS concepts

Introduction to Qualitative Research and ATLAS.ti
Description:
This course provides a brief, practical introduction to working in ATLAS.ti, covering basic terminology and functionality of the program. This will include importing text documents, coding and annotating documents, and exploring relationships through analysis and query tools. Time permitting, we may also briefly discuss best practices for data management.
