ICPSR Resources

The CSSCR Online Holdings

About ninety percent of the CSSCR online holdings are data received from ICPSR. We have unlimited access to the ICPSR archive and may retrieve its data and documentation quickly for our users. Our online collection is developed through individual data requests made by university researchers as well as the archivist’s periodic acquisitions based on the archivist’s judgment of the importance and potential popularity of the new data for social science teaching and research.

The easiest way to view and access the CSSCR online holdings is using our Archive Browser. On the browser page, studies are organized alphabetically by title. Under each title, information such as data source, codename, abstract and storage medium is displayed. On the bottom of each study, clicking “Get Files” allows you to access and download files from that study. If a study is from ICPSR, you may also view related documentation directly on the ICPSR website through the “Get ICPSR Documentation” link.

If you already know the codename of a particular study and would like to see or download its associated files, you may simply type the codename in the box on the bottom of the Archive Browser page and press “Submit”.

The Online CSSCR Compendium link puts you into a "List" view of the CSSCR Online Data Archive. Twenty citations at a time are displayed. Buttons at the bottom can move you through the collection 20 citations at a time or to the front or end of the listings. In the upper right hand corner of the title bar is a button which will provide a one data set at a time "Form" view of each citation. At the bottom of the "Form" view is a button which will create a listing of files associated with the codename you provided in the box. The initial state of the box contains the present Codename of the viewed dataset. These files are actually links which when clicked will move the chosen file from the Archive to your local hard drive. We also have an Adobe PDF version of the CSSCR Archive Compendium if you would like to print the entire document or some sections of it.

If the data set you are interested in is not yet available online or is not listed in the database, please contact our archivist. The data you are interested in may be available on CDROM, DVD, or through another source. So if you don't find it in the Online Compendium, it does not necessarily mean it isn't there. We have new data added to our archive frequently and it may take a while for them to be accessible through the World Wide Web.

For additional ICPSR information, please visit the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) website. If you find any ICPSR datasets you are interested in but are not available yet in our local archive, send your request to our archivist and let us order them for you.

If you are attempting to access ICPSR datasets from outside of a University of Washington campus, the UW Library provides a proxy service to allow such connections. Click here to access this proxy service.
